Jaw & Bite

Jaw and bite related problems is something we take seriously, we have had formal training and have attended post graduate instructions courses both here and in the USA since 1989. We belong to specific associations associated with it including the Pankey Allumuni, the American Equilibration Society and the American Association of Orofacial Pain and we are one of the founding members of British Society of Occlusal Studies (BSOS).

For our patients we believe that correcting bite and jaw related problems before beginning any form of reconstruction whether simple restorative or more complex aesthetic and functional treatment is the most important thing we can do for them, otherwise the treatment we do is just masking the underlying issue and has the potential to fail.

Symptoms of jaw and bite problems can be head, neck and shoulder pain as well as toothache and jaw ache.

We are lucky enough to be able to offer not only our accumulated knowledge on this subject but also some of the latest technology used for recording biting pressure and pattern.

Understanding how the jaw works and the importance of balancing the bite is invaluable for our patients when it comes to planning their bespoke treatment.

In the majority of cases an occlusal splint (type of hard gum shield) can be used to help even the pressures placed on the teeth from grinding, clenching etc caused by everyday stresses and strains.

The following digital video animations give a simple informative demonstration on the jaw and some of the related issues and solutions.
